CHOICE – Freedom in Learning (part of the Acton Academy network) is an independent PreK–9 microschool located in Woods Cross, Utah, designed to empower each child as a “hero on a journey” toward discovering their unique gifts. Their learning environment is thoughtful and intentional: mixed-age grouping removes traditional grades in favor of developmental studios where children learn together, mentor each other, and build a strong, supportive tribe.
Education at CHOICE is structured yet deeply personal. Learners work at their own pace, using adaptive educational technology to master core skills like reading, writing, and math on an individualized timeline—mastery is constant, and time becomes the variable. The learning model emphasizes Learning to Learn, Learning to Do, and Learning to Be, and unfolds through project-based “Quests”—four to six-week, narrative-driven challenges culminating in public exhibitions showcasing student work.
Guides, not teachers, intentionally avoid giving answers. Instead, they pose thoughtful choices and guide exploration, helping learners cultivate self-direction, initiative, accountability, and problem-solving skills. Families are integral to the process—parents participate in goal-setting, annual planning, and enjoy a home-centric day each Friday, reinforcing the belief that family is central to education.
CHOICE also integrates practical affordability, with no hidden fees. Families may supplement through programs like Utah’s Fits All Scholarship, Children’s First Education Fund, or Open Ed.
